A disagreeable demonstration. Video footage of performance. Digital video, 1080 x 720 pixels
Together with We the people, Disagreeable creatures, seeks to address and represent my emotional experience of the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests. During these demonstrations, I was living in the city centre of Chicago and I was able to experience them first hand. Some of these events happened simultaneously to the series of lockdowns that Chicagoans had to endure during the first half of 2020, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Creature No. 1. Stainless steel and plastic. 32 x 23 x 20 cm
Disagreeable creatures is a series of sculptures made out of plastic cable ties and standardized stainless steel objects. These are metallic articles designed to either modify the appearance of the body, like beauty accessories, or to probe, examine and torture it, like anal speculums and chastity belts.
Creature No. 2. Stainless steel and plastic. 26 x 30 x 26 cm
These biomorphic creatures, though not always anthropomorphic, have a direct connection to the human body. Through their violent qualities, they reference the social conventions and impositions that can sometimes define western societies. They also allude to the insect-like human behaviour, that people oftentimes take on, during difficult times, like the Covid-19 pandemic.
Creature No. 3. Stainless steel and plastic. 34 x 23 x 24 cm
These pieces, through their physical characteristics, explore the dark side of human inventiveness and behaviour. Some of them are designed to be handled and manipulated. They can be used as the material for a series of performance pieces or, perhaps the audience could be invited to use them as fetishistic toys and play with them in the exhibition space.
Creature No. 4. Stainless steel and plastic. 35 x 35 x 43 cm
